Paul wrote Philippians from a Roman prison, chained and awaiting a trial that could cost him his life, yet the letter overflows with joy. His circumstances did not derail God's plan. They advanced it. The gospel reached Roman soldiers, government officials, and even members of Caesar's household because Paul was exactly where he was. His faithfulness under pressure also stirred courage in other believers, moving them to speak more boldly. Paul's declaration that to live is Christ and to die is gain was not a death wish.
